porter: This is from The Samples’ Blue album. I love the shirt so much, you know, it makes me think of my dad and The Samples. It definitely holds up today l get compliments on this shirt all the time. I love how stretched out the neck is and the holes in the back. It's just very classic vintage.
esc: I’m so glad you took it out of the box
Porter: It’s so fun this stuff comes back around. For so long my parents said, “just leave it in the box no one’s going to wear that.” My mom insisted on keeping all of my dad’s concert t-shirts. I'm glad she did, I’m so happy.
esc: I had no idea your dad was a photographer
Porter: He wasn't. He managed the band and was like, all right boys sit down in the field we need a picture for the album cover.
esc: What history, it's family history.
Porter: It is.
esc: I'm so glad you're wearing it and not afraid to wear it.
Porter: Yeah. I mean, it's old and whatever. I don't really wash it anymore. that will disintegrate it. This is like thick rails for sure.
esc: You feel your superpower.
Porter: Yeah, for sure.
esc: Would you ever want to do design or become a stylist?
Porter: Yeah, I could see myself doing it for sure. But that's kind of the tough part. Like, I feel like I'm really good at a lot of things, but I'm not great at any one thing, and especially with design, I'm kind of all over the place. I can do graphics and design hoodies and take pictures and videos and all sorts of stuff.
I feel I'm in creative space too. That's really important because if you put all your eggs in one basket, it doesn't work out right, you're screwed. That's why I like it, especially being in college and stuff, you know, finding my way creatively.
esc: You know how to “be” with creative purpose, keep allowing yourself to hear your intuitive voice. You, like your dad, can do all sorts of stuff...keep “being really good at a lot of things”.
